Surgery & Almost a week after

A few days have passed since I had my surgery and I'm doing okay.  I had an overnight stay at the hospital and have since been on a liquid diet again (soup, yogurt, cottage cheese are allowed as long as it is smooth consistency).

As of 5/19, I am down to 263.  Doing okay with the vitamins and shakes.  The brand my doctor's office uses does not taste the best. When I get close to running out I am going to find another brand for vitamins.  As far as protein, I already have that ready. Syntha-6 is awesome!

I also found out that during surgery my doctor found a growth on my liver.  I'm waiting for those test results to come back.

Right Upper Arm: 18.5"
Right Thigh: 30"
Righ Calf: 19.5"

5/5/2015:

Made it through one week on the liquid diet.  I am down 7 lbs weighing in at 279.  I am a bit hungry but I've really tried to be good and have only had broth 3 or 4 times and jello a couple of times.  I've been good about drinking water and love my flavored water!!

I'll try to post my weight on the day of my surgery (May 12th) and give an updated weight.

The Pre-Op Liquid Diet

Two weeks before surgery I am required to be on a liquid diet.  The shakes provide 800 calories and 108 grams of protein.  The protein is made by New Direction - Weight Loss System, available in 4 flavors (Chocolate, Strawberry, Mocha and Vanilla).

The liquid diet consists of:

4 meal replacement shakes (mixed with water only)
Water
Sugar-Free beverages (i.e. Crystal Light)
Decaf coffee or tea
Clear Broth
Sugar-Free popsicles and sugar-free jello

NOTHING ELSE! NO DIET SODA ETC..NO CAFFEINE...OH I DO LIKE MY MORNING CUP OF COFFEE!

1st Step - What do I do to get Weight Loss Surgery??

My primary care doctor referred me to Dr. Shadle with Sacramento BMI.  I attended an evening Bariatric Forum and learned about Dr. Shadle and all of the types of weight loss surgeries that there are.

These include: Lap Band, Sleeve and Gastric Bypass (Roux En Y).

I met with Dr. Shadle and his team.  I was given the approval to start and I had to complete quite a bit to get my insurance to approve the surgery.

1.  Attend a Bariatric Forum & Bariatric Support Group Meeting
2.  Consult with Dr. Shadle
3.  Consult with the Dietitian (3 meetings)
4.  Pap Smear (within the last 3 years)
5.  Chest X-Ray (within 6 months of surgery)
6.  Lab Studies (pre & post op)
7.  EKG (pre & post op)
8.  Upper GI Study
9.  Surgical clearance from your GP
10. Purchase Vitamins & Shakes for pre & post op

** If you are female and over 40 you have to have a Mammogram (within the last 12 months) & If you are over 50 years of age you need a Colonoscopy (with in the last 10 years).

Keep in mind these were the requirements of my health insurance and Dr. Shadle

Once all of this was completed, everything was sent out for approval from my insurance.  It took about 2 weeks and I received the okay!!!

My Story

Well here goes nothing!

Hello!  Thanks for dropping by.  My name is Kelly.  I live in Northern California (recently moved from Denver).  I'm married and have a daughter.

I've been heavy since I can remember.  I've lost weight and gained weight over and over again.  I'm tired, tired of being overweight, tired of not being able to keep up with my toddler, tired of having an entire closet of clothes (all sizes mind you) that don't fit or show every roll and bump - just tired and over it!

This is me in Hawaii - April 2015
(at my heaviest ever - 286 eek!)

A few years back I was about 260 and found a diet through my chiropractor called Ideal Protein. It was very strict, you ate their bars, drank their shakes and ate only lean protein and vegetables.  Over the course of 5 months (January to May of 2011).  I lost 60 lbs, then an additional 5 on my own after I took a short break from the diet.  I was happy, felt good. I was around 195 (which I know is still considered obese).  I was working out every morning, eating healthy and was happy!

Mexico - September 2011

In June of 2011 I went for my yearly physical/check-up and my doctor noticed my thyroid was enlarged so she referred me to a a doctor to have my thyroid checked and you guessed it, I was told I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

I slowly put on the weight while my doctor was trying to get my levels to the perfect level.  In January of 2012 my levels were perfect. There after many doctor visits and blood tests to get to that point.

Yes! Levels are good, maybe I'll start losing weight!  During this time my husband and I were trying to conceive.  In February (about 1 month out) I found out I was pregnant.  I was around 240 lbs when I found out we were pregnant.

This was the night, February 25, 2012 - who has a picture of the exact night you conceived?
I do by accident and well Facebook!  We were at dinner for Denver Restaurant Week.

We went on a "babymoon" cruise right before the cut off to travel.  Nice little trip to the Caribbean, even though I was so careful to constantly wash and sanitize my hands I still got sick.
Cruise about 4 months pregnant

Baby Shower - October 2012

January 2014

Off and on since the birth of my daughter, I've been trying to lose weight.  I lose a few pounds and then gain it right back.  I've tried multiple diets since and I am just ready to have the gastric bypass and hope that this is the answer.  I've thought about having this surgery for years!!  Like I said, I've been overweight since I was a kid and I want to inspire my daughter to be healthy too and be able to keep up with her.

My Sweet Morgan!

So that brings me to 2015!  Last year in October I decided enough was enough, I talked to my doctor about the possibility of having weight loss surgery.
